Feedback

That very serious 'f' word. We know how much of themselves writers pour into their work. We know how scary it is to send your writing off into the world. And we know how painful rejection and criticism can be.

Our one-on-one feedback service offers constructive criticism and practical solutions that tackle everything from gaping plot holes to problems with tone and style. The process is designed in stages and clients can choose the best type of feedback for their story. This service is primarily aimed at authors of full-length fiction and non-fiction narrative writing, who want to be published but would be beneficial for anyone who takes their writing seriously.

So, how does that work? How much does it cost? And how long does it take?

Story Assessment

We offer new clients an one-off introductory assessment, to establish what stage a story is at and how best to take it forward. The feedback includes:

  • A 1-2 page report outlining key strengths and weaknesses
  • Corresponding comments on the chapter breakdown or synopsis
  • Comments on the first 5-10 pages of the story

Story assessments take approximately 3 hours and cost £60 (paid in advance). Assessments slots are booked 4-6 weeks in advance and have a turn around time of 1 week.

Structural analysis

Most stories will require a more in depth analysis. This focuses on the structure but also looks at plot, character, setting and writing style. This takes the form of:

  • A 6-10 page report detailing the major problems and proposing specific solutions
  • Corresponding comments on the chapter breakdown
  • Comments on other documents such as character profiles, the synopsis and sections of the manuscript

This stage takes 1-3 days (£120 per day) and clients can send revised documents back for a second or third round of feedback, to tackle the weak points. Waiting times vary between 4 and 8 weeks and turnaround time for feedback is 2 weeks.

Full read-through

As and when the fundamental aspects of their story are really strong and it's unlikely to require any major rewrites,  clients are invited to submit their manuscript for a full read-through. They will receive back:

  • A 2-5 page report with general feedback comments
  • Detailed comments throughout the manuscript

This takes 4-6 days (£120 per day) for a novel between 70-90,000 words long. Please allow at least 8 weeks notice to schedule a full read-through and up to 4 weeks turnaround time.

Line by line edit

And finally, a line by line edit will polish a story off and get it ready for submission. Please note that this isn't a copy edit but will serve to pick out any discrepancies, tighten up the writing and make it really shine.

  • A 2-5 page report with general feedback comments
  • Detailed comments on all or part of the manuscript

A line by line edit can be applied to the whole manuscript or just sections of it and, again, clients can send their revised manuscripts back for a second round of feedback. Editing can take 2-4 days (£120 per day). This stage of feedback can usually be scheduled within 4 to 8 weeks and turnaround will take 2 weeks.
